Today is December 21, 2024 – it is the Winter Solstice. This means that from now on, the days will gradually become longer again. It’s surely no coincidence that the arrival of Jesus, often referred to as the Light of the World, symbolically brings back the light. And soon, it will be time to bid farewell to the old year and turn our attention to the new one.
But before that, we first experience „the time between the years,“ which includes the 12 Rauhnächte or Raunächte. Both spellings are correct. In older, pagan traditions, these nights begin with the Winter Solstice on December 21 and end on January 1. After blending with Christianity, they now begin on December 25 and end on Epiphany, January 6.
Traditionally, there are 12 Rauhnächte, symbolizing the 12 months of the coming year. Even in pre-Christian times, people used this period to prepare for the new year. While the preparation began on December 21 in earlier times, the „time between the years“ shifted to start on December 24 with the integration of Christian customs.
For centuries, the Rauhnächte have been considered a magical time of transition between the old and the new year. They are characterized by deep spirituality, reflection, cleansing, and new beginnings. In many traditions, they hold special connections to the 12 months of the upcoming year. Each night symbolizes one month and provides an opportunity to interpret the new year, make plans, and prepare for the months ahead.

10 Possible Rituals for the Rauhnächte
Smudging
Smudging is used to drive away old energies and create space for new ones.
It is meant to ward off evil spirits and negative influences.
Use herbs like mugwort, sage, frankincense, lavender, or resins.
Walk through your home with a smudging bowl and focus on energetically cleansing the spaces.
Keeping a Dream Journal
It is said that during the Rauhnächte, the connection to the spiritual world is especially strong, and dreams during these nights serve as an oracle for the coming year.
Even if you don’t see a connection between the dream of a Rauhnacht and your life, write it down immediately upon waking.
Each dream is associated with the month symbolized by the corresponding Rauhnacht.
Manifesting Wishes
The Rauhnächte are considered a time when wishes and intentions for the coming year hold special power.
Write down 13 wishes on small pieces of paper.
Burn one piece of paper each evening (without reading it), symbolically releasing that wish to the universe.
Keep the last piece of paper and actively work towards fulfilling it.
Oracle and Card Reading
Each Rauhnacht is believed to offer insights into the coming year, and oracles can help interpret these messages.
Draw one tarot or oracle card every evening to receive a message for the corresponding month.
Record the cards and their meanings.
Reflection and Letting Go
The Rauhnächte are a time for reflection and letting go.
Write down what has burdened you in the past year or what you no longer want in your life.
Burn these notes in a bowl or fireplace to symbolically close these chapters.

Creating order in your surroundings helps gain clarity within.
Thoroughly clean your home before or during the Rauhnächte.
Avoid doing laundry during the Rauhnächte (an old tradition to avoid bad luck).
Connection to Nature
The Rauhnächte are a time to strengthen your connection to nature.
Go outside, observe animals, listen to the wind.
These signs are said to offer clues about the coming year.
Traditionally, people also watched the „Wild Hunt,“ a mythical procession in the sky.

This time is ideal for introspection and strengthening your intuition.
Meditate in silence every evening.
Visualize the month associated with each Rauhnacht and imagine how you would like to shape that month.
